7:30 PM to 8:30 PM – More Than Just Miku: An Underrated Vocaloid Showcase

You may be familiar with Hatsune Miku, but did you know that there are over 200 other Vocaloids? Whether a new or old fan, it can be hard to keep up with so many different characters! In this panel many of the more obscure Vocaloid voicebanks will be shown off, both design and vocals and some fun trivia about them along the way!

Charlie Bennett is a huge Vocaloid and in general, vocal synthesizer fan. They have nearly 20 years worth of fandom experience and over 10 alone in running cosplay/fandom groups, staffing conventions, and just generally trying to contribute to fan culture in a constructive, unifying way. Besides Vocaloid, their interests also include Drag Race, Naruto, Shin Megami Tensei, and so much more!

BALBOA ROOM
4:00 PM to 5:00 PM – Beginning in Cosplay Construction

Ever wanted to make a cosplay but don’t know where to start? Join FatherChildCos in this educational panel where you learn the basics to start your craft!

A Father Child duo who cosplays together. Double the trouble, double the nerds.

5:30 PM to 6:30 PM – Modern Zine Culture and the Making of Fanbooks

A panel that will go into the ins and outs of modern fandom zines! Includes the process of making a zine, from conception to finish, from the perspective of zine runners/organizers. It’ll also touch on how people can get involved if they’re interested (as zine moderators and/or contributors) and share some tips on how prospective contributors can make their applications/portfolios more appealing. For anyone who is interested in fandom zines as a concept and wants to learn more, or who wants to take part in zines themselves. This panel is a love letter to fandom zines and wants to shed light on the process for anyone who’s interested.

Bee has a Master’s in Literature and Writing and is currently earning her Masters in Fine Arts for Creative Writing. She has been working on zines for three years, and has been involved in 20+ zines as a moderator and 30+ zines as a contributor.

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM – Anime Connect

Based on the BBC game show Only Connect, Anime Connect is played by two teams of up to three contestants across four rounds.

The first round is the Connection Round. In it, one team will see a set of up to four random clues and have to tell me what links them. It could be something like “Characters who lost their left arm” or “Characters with hair that is half one color and half another.” If they don’t guess it, their opponents get a chance to steal.

The second round, the Sequences Round, plays out similarly but instead of giving me the connection, teams only get up to three clues and have to give me the fourth in a sequence. Examples include “Crunchyroll Anime of the Year Winners for the Last Four Years” or “Anime Characters with Colorful Nicknames in Rainbow Order.”

The third round is the Connecting Wall. It’s like New York Times Connections game. The teams will each get a wall with sixteen jumbled clues and have to sort them into four sets of four within 3 minutes. They get a point for each group they find and can earn another point for each connection they identify.

J.D. has been a nerd as long as he can remember. Now as a writer and producer for A-to-J Connections, he likes to use his knowledge of anime, manga, video games and other media to create quiz shows to stump and delight contestants and sometimes, to torment his friends. You know, as a treat.
